The simple fact is that the arcane is here to stay. It surrounds us. It imbues our daily life with a level of power undreamt of. It’s loss would devastate the rich and the poor. The healthy and the sick. The haves and the have-nots.
__
Now many of you I am sure will be quick to point out that what does the average serf know of
magick? I’ll admit, very little. Chances are they will never wield it, let alone see it in action.
__
However that is not the appropriate question to ask. What an individual knows about the arcane
has little to do with how the arcane affects that individual. Take Cormyr. Would that nation exist without its vaunted War-Wizards? I cannot imagine for a moment that Cormyr would have weathered the storms of its history without the aid of many an arcane user. How many Cormyrian citizens exist owe their lives to the arcane, yet have never interacted with the arcane directly?
Take the Elves. I think it goes without saying that the Elves are a defining example of the allure and use of magick. We still are at a loss to fully understand their mythals.
__
The point is the arcane is here and is an intricate and essential part of our world for every
individual. We must learn to use it responsibly for all of us. Magick is a science. With proper learning and respect for it, we can learn to live in harmony with it.
__
It is for that reason that we have a duty to ensure that magick is properly controlled and used
only by trained individuals. The single greatest risk to Faerun is of the rogue wielder of the arcane. The man with dragonblood in his veins who cannot control his ire. The woman who dabbles in the arcane mysteries and finds herself powered by the false secrets of the shadow weave. The drow who embraces necromancy and achieves lich-dom at the cost of a thousand lives.
__
They must be stopped. They must be controlled. They must be silenced. Bear in mind I am not
advocating a progrom. Such individuals should be brought to centers of study to learn to control their power. But we cannot, in good conscience, allow individuals to practice magic without the background, training and experience to prevent harm to others.
__
How many Netherese style disasters can Faerun tolerate? The time for a continent wide organization for the regulation of mages is now.

Re: Status as Graduate Student of the Arcane

Dear Mr. Demetrius,
It is my profound sorrow to inform you that the College has no choice but to ask for you to
leave the premises effective immediately. While your studies have been nothing short of exemplary, the fact of the matter is that your call for the Registration and Regulation of Mages has brought unnecessary and unwelcome attention to us from those elements of the arcane community that are less than pleased at the idea of losing their…independence.
__
While the College promotes an atmosphere of open discussion and debate, we cannot tolerate
such open division within our community. While we hope that you continue your responsible education regarding the Arcane, it, ironically, cannot continue within the regulated and orderly confines of this institution.

Very Truly Yours,

The Port of Mordulkin

“So can you tie knots?”
__
“Er…not really.”
__
“Can you swim?
__
“Not well”
__
“Ever rigged a ship’s sails? Climbed a rope?”
__
“No and no.”
__
“So why exactly would I want you on my ship?”
__
“Because unlike the rest of your crew, I am a man of science and…understanding. I am sure you have come across many…unknowable elements in your travels. Things poorly understood. Trinkets that can strike a man dead. Creatures who only desire your end. Injuries and diseases that resist treatment. I can help with all of that. All I ask is that I be given space for my equipment and the privacy for my studies.
__
In return you shall have the assistance of an educated mage at your disposal. I am sure an erudite individual such as yourself could see the advantage of such a…resource?”
__
“Of course I could. But what proof do you have of being a mage? If I had a ha’penny for every time someone said they were a mage, I could retire to a Castle in Chessenta!”
__
The mage pulled a pipe from his satchel and lit it with flick of his fingers. The smoke curled upwards and began to form runes.
__
“Your ship is anchored roughly 250 meters off shore, am I correct?”
__
“Er…yes.”
__
“I’ll wait for you aboard your ship. Have my belongings brought aboard via the pinnace when you
return from shore.”
__
“Just who do you think you are giving orders to —”
__
The Captain’s words were silenced as the mage stepped off the dock and began to walk across the
water towards the Captain’s ship.
__
“Well I’ll be…an actual mage…alright you lollygaggers! Get this chest aboard. We make sail for the Isles at noon!”
